A question: who makes government human?

A woman spent the better part of a year working a problem most people would have abandoned. Government documents from different states that didn’t agree with each other. As the systems connecting those documents have grown more integrated, the gaps between them have become harder to ignore — and harder to fix.

Most agencies have a process. Slow, often frustrating, but followable. One agency in this story had no such process — or if it did, it could not locate the legal authority for it. Letters sent and mostly unanswered. When they did answer, they contradicted themselves or cited guidance that had been superseded years earlier.

The kind of bureaucratic fog that makes people give up.

She hadn’t given up. But she was tired.

At some point she reached out to her state senator’s office. Not because she expected much. Because it was still on the list.

What happened next is worth understanding.

James Madison understood something that gets lost in arguments about government. He understood that the machinery matters as much as the principles. You can write the most beautiful statement of rights in human history, and it means nothing without people inside the system who take it seriously when a citizen walks through the door.

Federalist No. 51 is where Madison made the argument most plainly. He was not writing about angels or ideals. He was writing about humans inside institutions, and his point was structural: the system has to make doing the right thing the easier path. “Ambition must be made to counteract ambition,” he wrote. The interests of the people inside the machinery aligned with the rights of the people outside it.

What Madison couldn’t legislate was the individual inside the institution. The person who answers the phone. The person who listens. The person who says, out loud, that something doesn’t seem right and decides to look into it.

That person exists. And when a citizen in Florida needed her, she was there.

Constituent services, as Madison conceived it, is not a courtesy. It is a structural function of republican government. It is how a citizen with a legitimate grievance reaches the system when the system has stopped listening. In a small district office in Florida, that function worked.

The situation was complicated. Documents from multiple states. An agency citing a memo nobody could find the legal authority for. A certified birth certificate that one office accepted and another refused. The kind of thing that sounds simple until you try to explain it and realize it has seventeen moving parts.

The staffer listened to all seventeen parts.

She didn’t redirect. She didn’t recite policy. She didn’t say that wasn’t her office’s area. She said she didn’t understand why an agency would refuse a certified birth certificate. She said she would look into it. She followed up.

What she did not do is as important as what she did. She did not treat the situation as an inconvenience or the person as a number. The machinery of government runs on people, and people can choose how they show up inside it. She chose to show up with kindness. Madison built the structure. She supplied the humanity the structure cannot mandate.

That is the job. Not heroism. Not above and beyond. The job — as Madison designed it.

This piece is not about this one case. It is about the baseline. The minimum the system owes every citizen who walks through the door with a legitimate problem and a good-faith request for help.

That baseline was met. In a moment when trust in institutions is at a low I have not seen in my lifetime, one office in Florida picked up the phone and did the job.

Madison would have recognized it. Not as heroism. As the ordinary functioning of republican government. As exactly what he designed it to do.

The problem that brought this citizen to her senator’s office is not resolved. The agency is still grinding. But one part of the republic performed as designed.

Accountability requires noting what the system does right, or we lose the ability to tell the difference. We spend a great deal of time documenting what goes wrong. This is a record of what went right.

Someone answered the phone. She listened. She worked the problem.

As they intended.

A Country Returned to Science

A question: is this the way it was always meant to be?

On January 20, 2025, Executive Order 14168 was signed into law. Science, the administration declared, had returned to government. The order would settle the question once and for all. Simple. Biological.

The statements were amazingly concise and conformed to 4^th grade biology when we first learned about science. We were taught everyone is either male or female. Basic biology. And for those of faith, just as our creator intended.

Full stop. No need to learn any more biology. Right?

The Rest of the Science

When an embryo first begins to grow, every conceived embryo starts the same way.

Female.

That is the starting point for all fertilized embryos. No exceptions.

No earlier than six weeks into development, if all the stars align, a very specific series of signals must begin. Must be received. Must be processed correctly. Every step must go exactly as required.

Any interference, variation, drugs even approved ones, or the will of a divine being can alter this path away from what 4th grade biology taught you.

Contrary to popular belief our creator did not design a simple boy/girl switch. A complex series of steps masculinizes the always female fetus. Some signals form brain structures. Some establish hormones and form receptors. Some create genitalia which some people view as the whole of who we are.

If any individual signal fails, that associated system continues to form as female.

Now read what Executive Order 14168 actually says.

“Female means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the large reproductive cell.”

“Male means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the small reproductive cell.”

The phrase “at conception” is carrying more weight than its authors might have intended.

The science they returned to confirms that every embryo at conception is female. No signals have fired. No transformation has begun. No reproductive cells of any kind exist yet in anyone. With the right series of signals this embryo can go either way. In the absence of those signals, the path is female.

By the executive order’s own definition, every embryo is female at conception.

As the sun shines on this new day of honoring science, what does the world look like as we stare into a new dawn?

For the first time in American history, federal policy has established a matriarchal foundation.

Not achieved by feminists. Not by progressives. Not by decades of advocacy.

By a single stroke of the president’s pen the United States is a Matriarchy.

Since science confirms every embryo is female at conception, the answer to every federal form asking for sex is the same.

Female.

All of them.

The science was always there. It simply waited, patiently, to be read.

The Guild, The Tonic, and the Shadow Hope

A question: does the comfort of a dozen outweigh the lives of a few?

What follows is a pamphlet in the old tradition. A hypothetical. A what if, posed in the manner of those colonial writers who understood that the question, asked plainly, is sometimes more dangerous than the answer.

Greetings to the Citizens of a Free Republic.

Suppose there existed a beautiful colony with a great merchant guild. Not a guild of cobblers or coopers, but a guild of considerable weight — one that held the retirement savings of your teachers, your constables, your clerks, and your keepers of the public records. A guild entrusted, by law, with the security of those who had spent their working years in service to the commonwealth.

And suppose that this guild, in the course of its stewardship, had invested a considerable sum for retirement in a trading company with a great reputation and greater profits.

Now. Here is where our story becomes interesting.

The Tonic

Several decades ago, this same trading company had sold an amazing wonder tonic with incredible powers to ensure health not only for mothers but even for their children. A fine tonic, they said. It was recommended and taken widely and confidently, and for a time it was believed to be a wonder of ancient industry.

As decades passed and the families grew...

Some of them appeared to be very unfortunate in their lives. They began beating the odds not in a favorable way. Their bodies had developed along paths that the physicians of the time did not expect. Some mothers became seriously ill. Some children began to experience the curse of their mothers. Some bore conditions that no name had yet been invented for. The trading company faced its reckoning — lawsuits, settlements, decades of legal contest. And then, as such things go, the courts said: enough. The matter is closed. The liability ends here.

The trading company survived. It prospered. It became, in time, one of the most valuable enterprises in the known world. And the merchant guild, watching its fortunes rise, invested accordingly.

The Shadow Hope

The mothers who took the tonic did not take it carelessly. They took it hopefully. They were told it would carry their children safely into the world. The hope was real. The love was real. The tonic was prescribed by physicians they trusted, manufactured by a company the crown had approved, and given in good faith to women who wanted nothing more than a child born whole.

But hope casts a shadow when it goes wrong. And the shadow does not stop at the first generation.

The children of those mothers grew up and had children of their own. And some of those grandchildren began to present themselves to physicians exhibiting signs of the curse. Not the golden results the guild and crown described. Something more subtle. Something in the very architecture of how their bodies had been assembled before they were born, in the quiet chemistry of a womb that had itself been altered by the tonic a generation before.

These are the Shadow Hope. Not a name they chose. A name for what they are: the living shadow of a hope that was real. It was real both in helping bear children and real in the century-long curse it bestowed.

Almost a century later, the natural philosophers of the time have a name for the mechanism: epigenetics. The study of how what happens to one generation can be written into the bodies of the next, silently, without announcement, waiting to be read by someone who knows the language.

Suppose some of these people — grown now, living their lives, paying their tithes and raising their families in your colony — began to seek recognition for what had been done to them. Not revenge. Not riches. Simply acknowledgment. A document that said: this person is who they say they are, and their body is what it is for reasons that science can now explain.

The Reckoning Draws Near

Now consider the present and our colony’s society...

The merchant guild has heavily invested in the trading company; certain this investment will protect the members’ retirement. Leadership in the guild has active control of the leadership of this colony, controlling every aspect of the citizenry of the land.

The small group of citizens plagued by the Shadow Hope depends on the members of the guild to limit the cloud of misfortune shadowing their bloodline. They need their physicians heard. They need the agencies of the colony to treat them as what they are — not as a problem to be managed or eliminated. They, through no fault of their own and well beyond their control, require different support than the citizen born in the light. The theological leader of this town preaches compassion. So, you might expect things to be looking up for these families.

But the guild realizes a dark secret when the law prevents any further burden on the trading company. They realize that if the Shadow Hope are recognized — truly recognized, clinically and legally — the question of the tonic does not go away. It gets louder again, and a nightmare becomes public once more in the town square.

What did the guild’s leadership realize this might mean?

The future of the guild’s investment.

Nobody had to plan this. Nobody had to meet. Nobody had to say the words out loud. The needs of the powerful outweigh the needs of a small group of peasants is simply assumed.

The War That Needs No General

In the colony there is, at this moment, a great campaign being waged against a certain class of citizens. The campaign has many names. Many justifications. Many voices lend it respectability. It is waged in legislature, in courts, in schools, in agencies of record.

The people targeted are described, consistently, in terms designed to make them easy to dismiss. They are called confused. They are called deluded. They are told their own experience of their own bodies is a disorder of the mind rather than a condition of the flesh. The language is not accidental. Language never is.

But here is what the campaign does not say. What has never been asked, in any legislature or any courtroom or any agency proceeding.

What if some of them are not confused at all? What if some of them are the Shadow Hope — the documented, measurable, explainable result of something that was done to their grandmothers? What if the war on their identity is, at least in part, a war on an explanation that could harm the future of the powerful? What if it has been decided, quietly, that their discomfort in life — and in some cases their destruction — is acceptable to protect the funds and retirement of others.

I am not saying that is why the war is being waged. I am saying that it is a question nobody is asking. And history tells us the questions nobody is asking are often the most important stories that need telling.

What the Founders Would Have Asked

The men who built this republic were not naive. They had seen what guilds do when their interests are threatened. The founders knew the importance of protecting the citizens from the personal interests of powerful groups. That protection was the separation of powers — not because they trusted power, but because they did not.

Consider the case where dismissing a small group of citizens is worth, in dollar terms, a very large sum indeed.

They would have asked: who benefits from the silence? They would have followed the money. They would have named the conflict not with fury but with precision, in the plain language of a republic that believed its citizens could be trusted with the truth.

Parting Thoughts

I am not telling you the guild or the trading company is corrupt. I am not even suggesting any of this exists in the world today.

I am only inviting you to sit, with the question that honest citizens of a free republic have always been willing to ask: when a small group is silenced, follow what is gained by the silence. When a story is suppressed, ask who benefits from its burial.

The greatest motivators in human history are wealth, power, and self-interest. They require no conspiracy. They require only that the comfortable remain comfortable, and the inconvenient remain quiet.

The founders asked these questions. So might we.
